About me
Joan Giovannini is Manager of Faculty Development with Instructional Design, Engagement, and Support (IDEAS) at University of Massachusetts Amherst, where she leads institution‑wide initiatives that support evidence‑based, and technology-enhanced teaching and learning. Joan designs and facilitates faculty development programs, learning communities, and fellowships that help educators translate pedagogical values into sustainable practice, with particular attention to equity and instructional innovation.Joan’s scholarship centers on open education, open pedagogy, and faculty development as change work. She is the author of the open textbook Children, Families, Schools, and Communities that is widely adopted as an openly licensed resource in child and family studies. Her additional OER publications include curriculum and learning objects focused on early childhood education and inclusive pedagogy.Prior to her current role, Joan served the Associate Director of the Center for Excellence in Teaching, Learning, and Scholarship at Springfield College and as Department Chair and Professor of Education at Holyoke Community College in Holyoke, Massachusetts. She brings experience as both a faculty member and educational developer to her work and is passionate about partnering with educators to explore open practices that expand access, honor student expertise, and build community‑centered learning environments.
